If you use Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (on the 9.04 too, I have checked personally ) and intend to do conversion between formats, either audio or video , you need to convert to ffmpeg famous. going to Synaptic package manager .
In " quick search " write: libavformat 52 (if not exist as such, removes the 52 and will see that a very similar name).

After install: libavformat -extra-52 (or similar, it's extra important.)
Install: gstreamer 0.10- ffmpeg.
And finally: (if you have one) ffmpeg. Reboot
